Rotary clubs in Malawi have reached out to 700 Tropical Cyclone Freddy survivors in Phalombe with relief items worth over K21million.

The items included maize flour, cooking oil, soya pieces and blankets.

Representing the rotarians at Misimisi camp in the area of Traditional Authority Mkhumba, Rotary Club of Blantyre president Zondwayo Mafuleka explained that they bought the items with the donations that some corporate entities, groups and individuals made through the clubs.

He said on behalf other rotary clubs of Limbe, Lilongwe, Capital City, Lingadzi, Bwaila and Mzuzu: “We raised over K30million through donations from various entities but a big chunk has been used to help survivors in Phalombe after the learning about their struggles through the Department of Disaster Management Affairs [Dodma]”

One of the survivors Beatrice Liwonde thanked the rotarians and the donors for helping with some basic necessities, saying they will go a long way in mitigating their pain.

Ntcheu Burial Society member Martin Chimpeni, whose South Africa-based group contributed K1million towards the purchase of the items, said they felt a great need to support fellow Malawians through the clubs.

“Our group was formed with a purpose of helping fellow Malawians as regards to repatriation of the sick and the dead from South Africa. However, we felt obliged to dedicate some funds to cyclone survivors back home,” he said.

Other entities that channeled their financial support through the rotary clubs are Nico Group, National Investment Trust plc (Nitl), Cooper Smith, Candlex Limited, Rotary International and some individual rotarians.
